Construction for the Las Vegas Motor Speedway in Las Vegas, Nevada, began in 1995. Since then the track was termed “The Diamond in the Desert.” It is an intermediate, D-shaped oval track that is 1.5 miles, and it seats 137,000 NASCAR racing fans. The Las Vegas Motor Speedway race track is home for the UAW-Dodge 400 on the NASCAR Nextel Cup Series each season.
The track cost $200 million to plan and construct. Las Vegas has hosted auto-racing events such as the UAW Daimler Chrysler 400 in March for the NASCAR Sprint Cup, the Sam’s Town 300 in March for the NASCAR Nationwide Series, and the Las Vegas 350 in September for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
The first race held at Las Vegas Motor Speedway was an Indy Racing League event in 1996. NASCAR’s Busch Series followed soon thereafter, and in 1998 the Cup series made its first visit with Mark Martin picking up the victory.
