Atlanta Motor Speedway NASCAR Racing

Atlanta Motor Speedway is a 1.54 mile track in Hampton, Georgia. The track sits on 870 acres in Hampton, Ga., just 25 miles south of Atlanta, It was founded in 1960 and has been a mainstay of NASCAR action ever since. This intermediate, quad oval racetrack, will host the Kobalt Tools 500 in March, and the Pep Boys Auto 500 in October, both of those races being in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series.

Fireball Roberts won the first race at the track, located near the city of Hampton, Ga., on July 31, 1960, at the track that was then called Atlanta International Raceway.

The NASCAR Busch series race being held in Atlanta is the Nicorette 300, also in March. If you’re looking for NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series racing, check out the American Commercial Lines 200 in March and the Easy Care Vehicle Service Contracts 200 in October. This large track seats 124,000 excited fans.

The turns are banked at 24 degrees and the infield at Atlanta Motor Speedway is approximately 120 acres which makes for one exciting race! Today, more than 125,000 tickets are available for fans to come see racing at a track where competitors love to compete. Atlanta Motor Speedway also was the site of one of the most memorable season finales in Cup history.

On Nov. 15, 1992, Bill Elliott won the Hooters 500, but Alan Kulwicki came away with the championship after a race in which he, Elliott, Davey Allison, Mark Martin, Kyle Petty and Harry Gant all had a chance to emerge as champion. On that same day, Richard Petty drove in his final Cup race and Jeff Gordon ran in his first one.
